Kunia Country Farms
Educational Outreach
Our Mission Partners.
Our Mission Partners help us succeed by providing resources to support our sustainability efforts, expertise in the fields of aquaculture and aquaponics, or funding for our outreach programs.
Founded in 1890, BEI Hawaii is the State's leading supplier of fertilizers and agri-chemicals. Kunia Country Farms sources our coconut husk growing media, organic fertilizers, and iron supplements from BEI.
We are also very grateful for BEI's generous grant in support of the BEI Educational Learning Center, a 1,500 square foot deck and outdoor classroom currently under construction.
Kunia Country Farms is an operating commercial Farm, and serves as both the laboratory and exhibition show-and-tell for our outreach efforts. It is a fully functioning commercial aquaponic farm producing 3,000-5,000 heads of lettuce each week off of 1 acre of land. Thus far, we have filled the system with water once, with almost no added water needed over the past 18 months. No soil degradation, no chemicals into the ground, no pollutants.
The UH College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources has been instrumental in assisting with:
* Aquaculture and Aquaponics research
* Farming Best Practices
* Food Safety - Good Agricultural Practices (GAPs)
At the root of our mission is sustainability - both environmental and economic sustainability. The premise for the operating Farm was to show that we could grow local produce to replace imported goods, at competitive prices and improved quality and freshness, in a socially and environmentally responsible manner. Producing what we need locally means we don't rely as heavily on mainland imports.
